Have you ever considered a career in recruitment? Neither had I when started my job search. To be completely honest, I was unsure on my career path but whilst on the hunt for marketing and HR roles, I stumbled upon recruitment. I did some research and had several conversations with various recruitment firms and now here I am, 6 months into my career with tml Partners, a marketing specialist recruitment firm, and it’s been amazing!
My first three months of recruitment consisted of training where I rotated across the different industry teams within the business. Not only was I able to learn about how marketing differs in each sector, but I was also able to appreciate the different styles in which my colleagues work. I then joined the technology team where I’m currently working on various projects across the UK and the US, working with, as an example, B2B SaaS, AI, information services, IT services and tech consultancy businesses. Working within the tech space, there’s a constant learning curve because the industry itself has continual growth.
Recruitment has both highs and lows – but that’s what makes it so rewarding! Here are three lessons that I’ve learnt along the way:
- Resilience is key: Recruitment is dependent on people, and people can be unpredictable, which can make our lives stressful! Learning that you’re not always going to make that placement on the first try, or that it might take hours (or even months) of searching to find the right candidate is something that I’ve learnt.
- It’s not just recruitment: This is one of the things I love about recruitment is that it’s so varied. You’re not only speaking to candidates and clients to place into a role. You’re also building a long-lasting relationship which is good practice for business development. Whilst building these relationships, you’re also marketing through job adverts, creating content pieces and championing your personal brand.
- It is far from a sales job: This is a common misconception of recruitment, and it was my initial perception too. However, since joining tml Partners, I have made zero cold calls! Yes, you are on the phone quite a lot trying to fill your roles, but all these calls have a foundation that you’re building on to maintain that long-lasting relationship.
Any job you go into will have its ups and downs, just like recruitment, but where else can you go for a fancy lunch, or a coffee with someone, and call it work.
