90 Second Interview with Tamara M. Camp
Evie Grogan, Manager and Head of the US desk at tml Partners, sat down with Tamara M. Camp, Former Google/YouTube Executive and Global Creator Growth, GTM and Platform Strategy Executive, to get her thoughts on career development, influential leadership and marketing trends producing opportunities and challenges for business leaders.
Who is your business hero and why?
The business heroes throughout my career have run the gamut from managers to peers and direct reports alike. I’ve found heroism in mentors who invested, trusted, and believed in me; in leaders who led with impeccable integrity and authenticity; and in mentees who had the courage to ask for help and go after their dreams with awe-inspiring tenacity and vigor.
What is the best piece of career advice you’ve ever received?
There are two pieces of career advice that I hold tight, the first is know that you belong. You did not get where you are because of luck or by accident, but it was YOUR hard work, sacrifice, and determination. The other is to believe and solve for the possibilities even if that is outside of your comfort zone. We all know that growth never comes from being comfortable.
What has had the most influential impact on your leadership skills and why?
By far the most influential impact on my leadership skills has been lived experiences. I have been fortunate in my career to manage and interact with global teams from a bevy of cultural backgrounds. While I am not infallible, I have made an earnest attempt to standardize what is good and healthy about those experiences, while learning and evolving as leader from what did not “work”. As a work in progress, I relish 360-degree feedback and truly take it to heart to show up and cultivate a positive environment and experiences.
What future trends do you think marketing and communications will see in your sector over the next five years?
Oh wow, this is such a loaded question…the world of marketing and communication is evolving faster than ever. The top three trends I will keep my eye on are:
- Technology, automation and measurement will continue to play a larger role in marketers’ ability to respond quickly to the ever-changing market and understand the impact of those efforts. The use of AI is more than notion, but what must be mastered is the ability to understand the attributes that go into the model so that tweaks can be made for on-going incremental gains. The secret formula will be the ability to leverage data and technology to predict >> test >> measure >> scale >> optimize quickly to maintain a competitive advantage in the marketplace.
- Marketers will have to balance the art of nurturing their existing base while appealing to the customers of the future. Implementing highly personalized acquisition, engagement and retention strategies will be key to ensure a brand’s value proposition resonates, maintains cultural relevance, and builds loyalty with target audiences.
- The way consumers learn and make purchasing decisions about a brand is changing. Strategies of yesteryear include brands touting and reinforcing their value proposition via a well-orchestrated push marketing campaign. Consumers today are far more discerning and influencer marketing is playing a larger role in building brand awareness and trust. This trend will continue to grow as the way consumers consume content and media continues to shift online.
What has fundamentally changed about your industry since you started working in it?
This one is easy, technology, technology, technology! I will likely date myself here, but integrated marketing strategies have shifted from TV, radio, out of home and direct mail to digital being king. The whole commerce experience is happening at a faster pace and more importantly, it is measurable. This measurability enables marketers to make smarter decisions about how they go to market. Even brand campaigns can draw correlation metrics. It is simply brilliant and so much more FUN!
What do you consider to be the biggest challenges for marketing & communications leaders?
Quite honestly, the biggest challenges for marketing and comms leaders are everything we discussed…the ability to effectively leverage data and technology to quickly make smart strategy decisions; ensuring loyalty with target audiences who have more choices than ever; and measuring marketing efforts that demonstrates proven incremental ROI impact.
If you could go back 10 years, what career advice would you give yourself?
There is so much to unpack here, but the advice I would give myself is stay curious, know your worth and don’t stress, because you got this. More importantly focus on the things you can control…life always works out the way it should.
